The Real Club de Polo de Barcelona hosted a new educational session organised by the Catalan Equestrian Federation (FCH) as part of the CSIO Barcelona Academy programme, the initiative promoted by the RCPB Foundation to foster education and technical knowledge within the equestrian sector.
The session, focused on improving sport horse performance and welfare, was led by veterinarian and equine sports medicine and training specialist Atocha Calvo Santamases, bringing together participants interested in gaining deeper insight into the physical preparation of competition horses through a practical and applied approach.
Throughout the day, the programme combined theoretical and practical content related to key aspects of equine training, including the foundations of sport horse conditioning, the distinction between basic and specific training, the correct weekly structuring of training routines, and competition preparation and recovery planning.
The training session also placed particular emphasis on the horse’s physical development and the importance of appropriate preparation to optimise sporting performance. In this regard, the practical component included comprehensive horse assessment exercises, analysis of musculature, flexibility and mobility, as well as specific stability and proprioception tests.
